Treatment of feline hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine

Radioactive iodine is the most effective and safest method of treating hyperthyroidism in cats. It targets the thyroid tissue that is producing excess hormones, while leaving healthy tissue undamaged. In most cases, a single application is sufficient. The success rate of treatment is over 95%.

Hospitalization regime

  • The treatment is administered as a single injection into a vein.
  • For radiation protection reasons, short-term hospitalization is necessary – usually 4–5 days.
  • During hospitalization, the cat is kept in a quiet environment under veterinary supervision.

Home care after returning

After returning, a small amount of radioactive iodine remains in the cat’s body, which is excreted in urine and feces. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the following measures for 14 days.

EXCREMENT (URINE AND FECES)

Collect daily in double bags, store outside living areas for another 14 days, then dispose of in normal waste. Keep a distance of 1–2 m.

INTERACTING WITH CATS

Keep close physical contact to a minimum, maintain a distance of 1-2 meters for 14 days. If there are children or pregnant women in the household, it is necessary to arrange for the cat to be placed with family or friends so that there is no direct interaction for at least 14 days.
